Perplexity is still the tool I open first when I need to research the internet. I use ChatGPT and Claude throughout the day, but Perplexity remains the clearest place to discover sources, follow evidence, and understand a topic quickly.
General AI assistants can browse the web, analyze files, write drafts, and carry out broader workflows. Perplexity is organized around search. Sources stay visible throughout the answer, and follow-up questions continue from the same research trail.
Its Research mode performs dozens of searches and reads hundreds of sources before producing a report, according to Perplexity. It also shows the references so I can open the strongest ones, check the date, and see whether the summary matches the underlying material.
The Source List Is the Product
A research answer is only as useful as the evidence behind it. I want to know which claims come from company announcements, government documents, research papers, reporting, or recycled commentary.
Perplexity makes that review easy. I can scan the source list, remove weak material, and ask it to rerun the question using only primary sources or a specific date range. I can also narrow the search to particular domains when the topic requires authoritative evidence.
Source volume does not guarantee accuracy. A report that reads hundreds of pages can still misunderstand a claim or repeat a bad source. The links make those mistakes easier to catch.
How I Use It
I start with a narrow question. I specify the market, timeframe, geography, and decision I am trying to make. I ask for primary sources, publication dates, conflicting evidence, and a clear explanation of what remains uncertain.
For competitor research, I ask Perplexity to separate company claims from independent reporting. For product research, I request current pricing, documented features, and direct links to the relevant pages. For industry analysis, I ask it to identify where credible sources disagree.
Once I have the source set, I may move the material into Claude or ChatGPT for another task such as drafting a brief, comparing documents, or creating a presentation. Perplexity handles the search stage particularly well.
The practical rule is simple. Use the tool that makes verification easiest. For deep research across the public internet, Perplexity still gives me the fastest route from a question to evidence I can inspect.
