Vis AI is led by Dr. Jeffery J. Machat, MD, FRCSC, DABO, one of the original LASIK pioneers and a proven builder in laser vision correction. He began performing laser vision correction on February 4, 1991 in Toronto, Canada, and over three and a half decades has completed 108,000+ procedures, including treatment for 680+ ophthalmologists and optometrists. He has trained 3,000+ surgeons in 24 countries in LASIK techniques and complication management, served as a Health Canada and FDA investigator, and authored 2 LASIK textbooks.
Beyond clinical leadership, Dr. Machat has scaled multi-site vision care businesses with operator discipline. He founded TLC Laser Eye Centers in 1993 and grew the company through building and acquiring 83 clinics, culminating in an IPO in 1996 on the TSX and Nasdaq. He later served as Chief Medical Officer and strategic advisor to Optical Express, supporting expansion from 11 to 55 clinics and developing clinical policies, training systems, and patient advocacy and complication management programs. Across additional executive medical leadership roles, he has provided clinical oversight for hundreds of surgeons and optometrists, shaping clinical and marketing strategy, advising on operational systems, and managing risk at scale. Dr. Machat is board certified by the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada and the American Board of Ophthalmology, holds multiple U.S. medical licenses, and currently serves as LASIK Surgeon and Medical Director with LASIK Vision Institute in Memphis, TN and Charlotte, NC.
